Sea Containers

Nestled along the South Bank of the Thames, Sea Containers at 20 Upper Ground, London SE1 9PD is more than just a restaurant-it’s a riverside experience wrapped in sophistication, contemporary design, and downright delicious food. Whether you're popping in for breakfast with a view or soaking in the evening city lights over a glass of wine, this place has a way of making you feel like London’s skyline was curated just for you.

The moment you step inside, there's an unmistakable buzz. It’s not just the warm tones and maritime-inspired interiors that grab your attention-it’s the energy. A mix of solo diners with laptops sipping lattes, couples clinking cocktails, and groups sharing plates over laughter creates a vibe that’s effortlessly cool yet unpretentious. The open kitchen adds a layer of intimacy, letting you witness the artistry behind each dish.

Speaking of artistry, the menu at Sea Containers doesn’t mess around. It's a well-orchestrated selection of small plates, signature mains, and indulgent desserts, paired with a seriously impressive drinks list. Let’s talk highlights.

Start with the Crab on Sourdough Toast-a dish that delivers both freshness and texture. The crab is delicately sweet, and the sourdough has the perfect crunch. Or go bold with the Octopus, charred just right and served with vibrant garnishes that let the natural flavor shine. The Sea Containers Flatbread deserves a mention too-soft, flavorful, and often topped with seasonal ingredients that change just enough to keep you curious.

If you're all about that luxurious touch, the Oysters and Carpaccio make a killer duo. Both are elegantly plated and scream quality sourcing. On the heartier end, the Ribeye is juicy, cooked to perfection, and pairs beautifully with a glass of deep red from their curated wine list. But don’t overlook the Halibut, which balances richness with lightness-ideal if you're after something refined but not too heavy.

Vegetarians won’t feel left out either. The Burrata-creamy, dreamy, and perfectly matched with roasted peppers or fresh green beans-is a fan favorite. For a morning bite, the Avocado Toast and Smoked Salmon Bagel are top-tier choices, especially when paired with one of their expertly brewed coffees.

And yes, Sea Containers knows how to end things on a high note. The Sticky Toffee Pudding and the Chocolate Brownie with Chocolate Sauce Cream are the kind of desserts that silence a table. Rich, balanced, and beautifully presented-exactly what you want after a well-paced meal.

Now let’s talk drinks. Their cocktail list is one of the strongest suits. Whether you're into a classic Negroni or a modern mix with floral notes, the bartenders here know their stuff. Prefer something lighter? The prosecco by the glass is crisp, refreshing, and a great companion to your seafood starters. The wine list is extensive, featuring both Old World elegance and New World boldness, and the staff is more than happy to guide you to your perfect pairing.

Another standout feature? Accessibility. Sea Containers has clearly put thought into making its space welcoming for everyone. From the wheelchair-accessible car park to the toilets and seating, the restaurant is designed to be inclusive and easy to navigate.

And if you're after ambiance, few spots do it better. The outdoor seating lets you soak in the riverside breeze, while the indoor space balances chic and comfort effortlessly. It’s the kind of place where you could host a business brunch in the morning and return for cocktails with friends at night.

This spot isn’t your quick grab-and-go, nor does it offer takeaway or delivery-but that’s kind of the point. Sea Containers is where you go to be there. To unwind, indulge, and enjoy a little slice of London's culinary scene that feels a touch more special than your usual city haunts. Whether it's the start of your day or the final stop of your night, it delivers-every time.

Stayed here for an anniversary evening. They gave us a glass of fizz to help us celebrate. It was appreciated. Attentive and friendly staff throughout the hotel, bar etc. Our room was clean and tasteful. Our requests were met with positive responses and we awoke to a lovely morning view of the Thames. A quick stroll to Borough market the next day capped off a pleasant weekend. Would stay again for sure.

Two friends and I dined here recently for a festive brunch out in London. The brunch was good value for money with the Prosecco option being £19 each for 1.5 hours of free flowing drink. On top of that you then choose which food dishes you would like. We had a couple of starters (recommend the 4 cheese croquettes) and then chose a main dish each, I would recommend the lobster roll which was tasty and filling, alongside the al crab crab Benedict which had plenty of crab. Service was great, the staff were attentive and made sure our drinks were filled at all times. Unlike some other brunches, it did not have a lively atmosphere but it made it a good venue to chat and enjoy company alongside the views of the river and St Paul’s.

Breakfast only - The food was not good. We both had to get our eggs redone (poached and over easy). It seems they grab most things for your plate off the buffet - even if you order a la carte. The cappuccinos were nice but not sure if they had any caffeine lol. Fresh juice was also great. The waitress we had was lovely and checked in on us. And it’s a beautiful spot.

Super cool and modern vibes with very attentive service. Amazing view of the Thames. Junior suite room was huge even by American standards. Bedding and curtains helped with the best sleep of our trip. Sounds weird to say but the water station was amazing and delish! We walked everywhere easily.

This is one of my favourite restaurants! I I recommend this restaurant to everyone. The steak has and will always be my favourite option here. I was lucky enough to get the time out menu and I cannot recommend it enough, three starters and three mains to try and we tried both desserts and shared. Whilst the vibe was great and the cocktails at 12th knot were a nice touch, we both left quite hungry. I was also a little shocked at the £6 sparkling water charge. I love the food and the flavor pairings but sometimes I wonder if the prices or the portions may need to be reviewed. I think it’s best to stick to the a la carte menu in this instance.
